The Hawa Abdi Foundation’s main goals are health care and education.
The Foundation was created in 1983 in Somalia, as a non-profit organization, dedicated to helping and providing quality health care for women and children. Since the beginning of the Somali Civil War, in 1991, we have been providing health care, not only for women and children but for all patients, of any gender, and any age.
In the last 3 years, the UNHCR estimates that more than 1,500,000 have become internally displaced in Somalia. Their estimate is that over 480,000 of those who have been internally displaced reside in the Afgooye corridor, which the area the Hawa Abdi foundation focuses on.
The Dr Hawa Abdi Foundation provides water, shelter, health care in our camp, which is home to over 90,000 internally displaced people, 90% of which are women, children, and elderly. We also provide education to over 800 children and 165 women.
The Foundation is committed to the better health care of the entire Lower Shabelle region. We seek to develop a lasting relationship with the community and educate them. To decrease mother and child mortality, which is a major cause of deaths, we are focusing on pregnant women and new borns – our clinic provides free health care (screening, delivery by C-section and neonatal care) for pregnant mothers and their children. One of our main focuses is reducing the risk of fistulas, which are severe complications that can develop during childbirth.
